A Virginia NAACP leader was killed in an ambush attack while vacationing in the Turks and Caicos islands over the weekend by alleged gang members, according to multiple reports.

Kent Carter, the vice president of the Arlington NAACP branch, was killed in the attack on Sunday, Oct. 2 while he was taking a tour of the area, the reports continue.

A suspect in the attack was also killed, and five other people including one American were injured in the violent incident as police fired back, the reports state.

Carter was a "soon-to-be husband", father, and veteran who was heavily involved in and admired by his community and peers, according to several posts mourning the activist.

The shooting is still under reportedly under investigation.
